ABOUT THE CHILDREN'S ILLUSTRATOR AWARD FOR
AFRICA
Macmillan are delighted to announce a second competition for children's
illustrators in Africa. Response to the initial competition, launched
in 2005, was most enthusiastic, and produced some outstanding entries.
Value: US$1,000
The winning entry, and runners up, will be displayed as part of the
writers' award ceremonies in 2008. Macmillan will enter into separate discussions
with the winner regarding further assignments in children's book illustration.
ENTRY INFORMATION
Entries will be assessed on quality of draughtsmanship, composition as well
as interpretation of the text and appeal to the age group of the audience.
-
Entrants may choose any of the three options suggested
below.
-
You may choose more than one option if you wish.
This will not affect assessment of your entry.
-
You can create sequential illustrations if you feel this
suits a particular option.

All settings and contexts are African.
1. Illustrate in full colour the following text from a
story for young children: Naomi picked up the magic calabash very, very
carefully ...
And placed it on her head. There. No spills. Perfect.
2. Illustrate in full colour or black and white the
following text from a story for teenagers:
Ben was standing on his usual corner, selling
newspapers, when he noticed the black car with tinted windows, gliding to a
halt outside the bank. His mouth went dry with fear.
3. Produce a full colour cover illustration for a
fantasy story for 10 year olds, entitled: Wandi and the Forest of Dreams.
You do not have to design the story title, but you should allow space in
your illustration for it to overprint.
