1. The competition is open to those aged 16 or over who are nationals or naturalised citizens of any of the countries which make up the continent of Africa and to those who were born as citizens in those countries. Employees of the Macmillan Group of Companies are not eligible.

2. Entries for the Macmillan Writer’s Prize for Africa must be original and unpublished manuscripts written in English, solely by the entrant, the unaided work of the entrant, which must in no way violate any existing copyright. A published text which is in copyright would not be eligible. Entrants must disclose whether they are in discussion with any other publisher regarding their work.

3. Entries must be prose fiction. Poems and plays are not eligible.

4.Entries must fall within one of the following two classifications:

The panel’s decisions are final and no correspondence on the results or the way entries were assessed will be entered into. Accordingly the panel of judges shall award one winning entrant for each of the following three categories:
(i) Junior
For an unpublished story in English for children between the ages of 8 and 12. Prize value: US$5,000
(ii) Senior
For an unpublished story in English for teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17. Prize value: US$5,000

For the most promising new writer in either the junior or senior category who at the day of the announcement of the Special Award has never had a work published in book form or agreed to be published. Prize value: US$3,000

7. All entries for the Macmillan Writer’s Prize for Africa should be typed, preferably double spaced, or legibly handwritten, on numbered pages, and submitted with a fully completed entry form. Illegible entries will be disqualified.

8. Please include your name and address, and, if applicable, your phone number/email address on the title page of any manuscript as well as on the entry form so that each entry may be attributed to the correct entrant. The classification (see 4 above) should be similarly clearly stated.
